G.S. Gopal Raaj Criticizes Unfair Blame on MS Dhoni for CSK’s Unusual Performance, Calls for Accountability Across the Team

Bengaluru, April 7, 2025 — In a strongly worded statement that has sparked widespread discussion in the cricketing community, G.S. Gopal Raaj, the Editor of City Today News, has condemned the recent trend of singularly blaming Mahendra Singh Dhoni — one of the most revered figures in world cricket — for the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) unusual performance this season.

Addressing the growing criticism directed at the former Indian captain, Raaj emphasized that attributing the team’s setbacks solely to Dhoni is not only unfair but also a disservice to the collective nature of cricket as a sport.

“MS Dhoni is not just a player; he is a global icon, a leader who has redefined the spirit of the game and brought India glory at the highest levels. It is absolutely unjust to point fingers at him alone when there are ten other players on the field,” said Gopal Raaj in a press briefing on Monday. “It is the responsibility of the entire team — from top-order batsmen to bowlers and fielders — to deliver results.”

Raaj further elaborated that cricket is inherently a team sport, and the performance of any franchise in a competitive league like the IPL cannot be pinned on one individual, regardless of their stature or role. He added that singling out Dhoni, who has consistently carried the team’s burden over the years and brought five IPL titles to CSK, reflects a biased and short-sighted view of team dynamics.

“This narrative of laying the blame at Dhoni’s feet overlooks the lapses in bowling strategies, batting failures from younger players, and occasional fielding errors that have contributed equally to the current state of affairs,” Raaj said. “Media and fans must show maturity and a deeper understanding of the game before targeting an individual who has given his life to the sport.”

In what appeared to be a broader call for introspection within the cricketing establishment and fan base, Raaj urged analysts and commentators to adopt a more balanced approach in evaluating team performances. He also emphasized the need for constructive criticism that considers the broader picture rather than undermining legends based on isolated events.

Dhoni, 43, has been playing a mentor-cum-finisher role in the current IPL season and continues to command massive respect across the globe for his composure, sharp cricketing mind, and contributions to Indian cricket.

The statement by Gopal Raaj has reignited conversations around media responsibility, fan behavior, and the burdens that iconic athletes continue to carry even in the later stages of their careers.

As CSK regroups ahead of their next match, calls for shared accountability grow louder — and so does the defense of one of cricket’s most celebrated captains.
