Sony BBC Earth Inspired Young Minds at Summer Movie Festival in Bangalore

Sony BBC, one of the most loved factual entertainment channels, has always been known for providing meaningful experiences to people. Building on its proposition, the channel has organised a *‘Summer Movie Festival’* in association with the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) across cities for school students. Providing access to a mix of content across science, wildlife, adventure and exploration, and manufacturing genres, the first leg of the festival concluded at Bangalore’s Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum.

Taking students on an enriching educational journey, the films created an atmosphere of awe and inspiration for school children across the city. The event began in Bangalore on April 16 and captivated over 350 students across three days. The titles showcased each day were ‘Inside The Factory’, ‘Frozen Planet II’, and ‘South Korea with Alexander Armstrong’ respectively. The content was specially curated to transform the way children perceive and engage with science, nature and culture.

‘Inside The Factory’ fuelled the curiosity of students as they were taken on a visual tour of the pencil factory in Germany. The students learned many things, right from how pencils are made to the reason they are hexagonal. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, ‘Frozen Planet II’, showcased peaks that create frozen habitats on Earth and the life that thrives in it. It is survival of the fittest as this region grapples with tough climatic conditions, struggle for food, and conditions such as avalanches and volcanic lakes. Whereas ‘South Korea with Alexander Armstrong’ depicted South Korea’s bustling downtown Seoul as Alexander visited Gangnam, the fabled district known for the popular ‘Gangnam Style’ video.

Upholding Democracy: The Failure of the Election Commission of India to Enforce Constitutional Integrity

As custodians of democracy, it is imperative for institutions like the Election Commission of India (ECI) to uphold the sanctity of the electoral process, ensuring fair and transparent elections. However, regrettably, during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the ECI has failed to fulfill its constitutional duty, emerging as a mute spectator to multiple violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and Representation of the People Act (RPA). This lapse undermines the very foundation of our democratic principles and warrants immediate attention.

The Model Code of Conduct (MCC), a set of guidelines issued by the ECI, serves as the cornerstone of free and fair elections, promoting a level playing field for all political parties. It prohibits activities that could unfairly influence voters or disturb the electoral environment. However, despite these clear directives, there have been numerous instances where political parties and candidates have brazenly flouted the MCC, indulging in activities such as hate speech, distribution of cash and gifts, and spreading misinformation.

Furthermore, the Representation of the People Act (RPA), which outlines the legal framework for elections in India, lays down stringent rules to ensure the integrity of the electoral process. Violations of this act, including bribery, undue influence, and corrupt practices, are grave offenses that strike at the heart of democracy. Yet, the ECI’s inaction in addressing these violations effectively undermines the rule of law and erodes public trust in the electoral process.

The Law and Policy Research Institute (LAPRI) has taken cognizance of these violations and has filed 28 complaints with the Election Commission of India and various Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of different states. LAPRI remains committed to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process and will continue to monitor and report violations of the MCC and RPA. We will keep a vigilant watch on all such infractions and will persist in filing complaints until the ECI wakes up and performs its duty.

Should the Election Commission of India fail to take appropriate action to address these violations, LAPRI is prepared to pursue legal recourse. We will not hesitate to seek redressal in the courts of law to uphold the constitutional principles of free and fair elections and to safeguard the democratic rights of all citizens.

In light of these concerns, we call upon the Election Commission of India to urgently review its enforcement mechanisms and take concrete steps to ensure the integrity of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. This includes swift and decisive action against those found guilty of violating the MCC and RPA, as well as strengthening preventive measures to deter future transgressions.

As citizens committed to the ideals of democracy, we demand nothing less than the strict adherence to constitutional principles and the preservation of the integrity of our electoral process. Anything short of this would be a betrayal of the trust reposed in the Election Commission of India and a grave disservice to the democratic aspirations of the Indian people, above mentioned statements were released at the press meet held at press club of Bengaluru.

The First Edition of ‘Cue Sports Premier League’ to be held from 4th May 2024

Bowring Institute announced the first edition of Cue Sports Premier League (CSPL), a national-level Snooker tournament in the city today. The tournament will be held at the South Pavilion Snooker Arena, Bowring Institute, Bengaluru from 4th May to 10th May 2024. Noted champions including Padma Bhushan and 27-time World Billiards Champion, Pankaj Advani, and Arjuna Awardees including Aditya Mehla, Sourav Kothari, and National Women’s Champion Vidya Pillai will feature in the first edition of CSPL.

Embassy Group will be the title sponsor of the inaugural edition of Cue Sports Premier League. The organisers have also roped in Audi as a co-sponsor.

The tournament which will be played at one of the best Snooker Arena in the country at Bowring Institute will be telecasted live on the Club Liv app.

A total of 56 players including both international and national players from across the country will participate in the first edition of the Cue Sports Premier League. These players were selected via auction held in Bengaluru on 20th April 2024, by eight teams that will be competing in the first edition of CSPL 2024.

The eight teams competing in the league are named Lightning Legion, Cyclone Crusaders, Summer Tuskers, Hurricane Hawks, Thunderstorm Titans, Tornado Tigers, Whirlwind Warriors and Monsoon Mavericks.

Speaking on the idea behind CSPL, Pankaj Advani said, “The CSPL is a unique event which is aimed at integrating players of 3 different categories – National, State and Club levels. I’m delighted that Bowring Institute is hosting one of the most exciting snooker tournaments India will witness. As the conceptualiser, ambassador and player of CSPL, I’m looking forward to wearing several hats. I am certain that a championship of this magnitude will attract more players to cue sports and inspire the aspiring cueists to further improve their game.”.

Raghavindrra YR, Chairman Billiards and Snooker at Bowring Institute said, “CSPL is designed in such a way that the tournament will give the upcoming players a chance to showcase their skills at the highest level and compete with the best players in the country. We want to provide amateur players with the opportunity to learn, enjoy and succeed with the use of their minds and skills. The league has received a great response, and I am sure that the league will help to promote the sport further and more players will take up the sport professionally”.

The CSPL will be played in a league format where all the teams will play against each other once and the top 4 teams will play in the semi-finals and the final will be played on 10th May 2024. The matches will be played in a 7-frame format, with the first six frames having a mix of Singles and Doubles involving the National, State and Club Categories. The match format has the best National Players playing alongside the State and Club Players, allowing them to pass on their experience and knowledge. The league also introduces a one-of-a-kind shootout as the 7th frame of every match which brings added and new excitement to the game of Cue Sports.

The Bowring Institute South Pavilion features a state-of-the-art snooker arena that boasts of 7 snooker tables, with a seating capacity of 140+ with live streaming facilities for the matches. The league will be played on World Championship Star Xingpai and Rasson Tables.
