Design Thinking to help Bengaluru lead a ‘Healthier Lifestyle’

Bengaluru Mayor & National Health Mission Director to explore exhibits at Ekya Design Challenge 2020

Bengaluru: Imagine, students of Grade I are able to redesign their classroom experiences or Grade 4 students formulate inventive solutions for waste management – a domain where even grownups have failed to resolve garbage problems.

Now, going a step ahead, students will demonstrate how Design Thinking can help Bengaluru lead a healthier lifestyle at a special event – Ekya Design Challenge 2020 – on 18th January at the Bangalore International Centre, Domlur between 9 am and 1 pm. The event is open to general public, who can experience and witness ‘Design Thinking’ in action. Over 150 teams comprising 3 members each will exhibit their prototype designs at the event.

M Goutham Kumar, Worshipful Mayor of Bengaluru, will visit the Design Challenge to ascertain if the solutions presented by the students can be implemented for the betterment of the city. He will also interact with the students on the occasion. He will be accompanied by Ramachandran R, Director, National Health Mission, Karnataka.

“Creativity, critical thinking and communication are at the heart of Design Thinking process. A synthesis of divergent thinking, analysis and arriving at convergent thinking as students reflect on the present situation and conjure up future possibilities is what Ekya Schools achieves through design thinking efforts,” said Dr. Tristha Ramamurthy, Founder and Managing Director, Ekya Schools.

Despite being the knowledge capital of the country and home to one of the largest human resources pool in the world, a healthy lifestyle is still a challenge for the people of Bengaluru. Long working hours, vehicular congestion, job market scenario, stress at work and pollution are deterrents to a healthy lifestyle in the city. Students will address these issues through ‘Design Thinking’ concept at the Ekya Design Challenge 2020.

Modern times present context and situations, which require immediate analysis, decision making and problem solving, Design Thinking equips students in dealing with problems in many fields that touch our routine life. Professionals in IT sector, business, research and innovation also apply Design Thinking to devise solutions.

Through Design Thinking, students acquire practical skills of research, organisation, creative thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, public speaking and presentation technique. Through the process, students brainstorm, categorise, organise information, conduct research and interviews, ideate and make prototypes which gives them a sense of ownership.
