RAO BAHADUR DHARMAPRAVARTHA GUBBI THOTADAPPA CHARITIES, BANGALORE

Gubbi Thotadappa Charities was started in the year 1903 and has been serving the society for the last 119 years by providing the free hostel facilities to the poor rural boys’ and girls’ students in addition to providing accommodation for travellers. Having come from a business background from Gubbi located in Tumkur district his forefather shifted the business to Bangalore, Sri. Thotadappa expanded the business in a big way. Located opposite the historic Dharmambudi lake (present day Majestic bus stand) Thotadappa constructed a historical landmark building in the name of Gubbi Thotadappa or Satra also known as a place for travellers who pass through Bengaluru. During those days Bengaluru was ruled by the Mysure Maharaja where Thotadappa invested Rs. 1,00,000 (One lakh) and formed a Trust to be run by Dr. K. Puttannachetty who was nominated as President. The interest received against this amount and the rent collected from the business persons housed in the commercial complex had to be used for improving the education standards of poor students coming from rural background and who could not afford education.

The Government of Mysore approved this good work being done from the charities.. This charity is presently being run by 10 Honourable Trustees who having served in various Organisations and various capacities (List enclosed). Over the decades the charities have been growing in leaps and bounds financially thus strengthening the charity to serve the society in a better way. Through this charities more than 1,15,000 students have completed their studies and are well placed in the society. Noted Centenarian Late Dr. Shivakumar Swamiji of Sri. Siddaganga Mutt and former Karnataka Chief Minister Sri. S. Nijalingappa were one among the students of this hostel. Currently more than 2200 students (boys and girls) are studying at various hostels situated across various Taluks in Karnataka. Apart from this the charities also gives out more than Rs. 30 lakhs every year as part of scholarship for the bright and poor students.
