Manipal Hospital Installs India’s First AI-Enabled Elekta Evo for Adaptive Cancer Radiotherapy

Bengaluru, July 25: In a major boost to cancer treatment in India, Manipal Hospital, Yelahanka has become the first hospital in the country to install the Elekta Evo, an AI-enabled adaptive CT-Linac platform that introduces Online Adaptive Radiotherapy (oART) into routine clinical practice. The advanced technology is expected to improve the precision of radiation treatment by allowing doctors to customise therapy based on a patient’s changing anatomy during the course of treatment.

The installation follows the Indian debut of Elekta Evo at AROICON 2025, the country’s premier radiation oncology conference held in Kolkata.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India reports nearly 1.46 million new cancer cases every year, highlighting the growing need for advanced treatment technologies capable of delivering more accurate and personalised radiation therapy.

Manipal Hospital said the new platform significantly enhances its radiation oncology services by enabling clinicians to modify treatment plans in real time. This allows tumours to be targeted more precisely while reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues, ultimately improving treatment outcomes and patient safety.

The hospital has already treated its first patient with locally advanced rectal cancer using the Elekta Evo system. The patient successfully completed neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy with minimal radiation-related side effects, demonstrating the potential of online adaptive radiotherapy in delivering highly targeted treatment.

Feras Al Hasan, Head of TIMEA at Elekta, said the installation marks a significant step towards expanding access to adaptive radiotherapy in India. He noted that the AI-powered platform combines advanced imaging and online adaptive capabilities, enabling clinicians to make more informed treatment decisions throughout a patient’s cancer journey.

Dr. Vikram Maiya, Lead Consultant, Radiation Oncology, Manipal Hospital, Yelahanka, said the hospital remains committed to introducing the latest innovations in cancer care. He said the Elekta Evo platform enables radiation oncologists to adapt treatment according to changes in a patient’s anatomy, allowing more personalised therapy while maintaining high treatment precision.

Dr. Maiya added that the hospital’s initial experience with patients suffering from rectal, cervical and prostate cancers has been encouraging. Patients undergoing online adaptive radiotherapy have shown good tolerance to treatment, with only minimal treatment-related side effects reported so far.

The Elekta Evo platform is powered by Iris, an AI-enhanced high-definition imaging system that provides detailed visualisation of tumours and nearby healthy tissues. Combined with online and offline adaptive capabilities, the technology supports a wide range of radiation therapy techniques on a single platform while streamlining treatment planning through AI-assisted contouring and faster dose calculations.

Adaptive Radiotherapy is an advanced treatment approach that allows radiation plans to be modified during therapy to account for changes in tumour size, shape or patient anatomy. By integrating high-quality imaging with intelligent software, the technology enables clinicians to deliver more accurate and personalised cancer treatment with greater efficiency.

Elekta Evo has received registration from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and is currently available in limited global markets.
