Bengaluru, 2nd March, 2020: Orion Mall at Brigade Gateway is proud to announce the first ever edition of Wempower, being held on March 8th, celebrated as International Women’s Day. Since the beginning of the past decade, women’s rights have stoodat the forefront of almost all major political and sociological discussions, worldwide. However, when statistics fromthe National Crime Records Bureau India, report glaring incidents of sexual crimes against women escalating 6.4% during 2012, and, we are faced with the horrifying reality of a crime against a woman being committed every three minutes, we are left with no choice, but to introspect on where women stand in the global fight for equal rights. To ask, if empowerment must come at a lofty price?
With Women’s Day being reduced to mere tokenism amidst a bevy of discount vouchers and bumper sales, themajority of women’s rights summits too are propelled by commercial and corporate agendas, that sadly dilute their impact and integrity. Wempower – the women’s day festival was conceptualised not just as a direct response to this growing consumeristic trend, but also to reflect on the progress made, the battles that still lie ahead, while celebrating acts of grit and courage by real life trailblazers from diverse domains who have dared to challenge and change the script and transform feminism into a more gender neutral and inclusively sustainabledialogue.
Acclaimed journalist, columnist on gender and sexuality and best-selling, feminist author Sreemoyee PiuKunduis the curator of this festival.‘The game changer in this festival is the seething real life crusaders who walk their talk and not just so-called, Page three celebrities who are on magazine covers. The thrust of Wempoweri s its strong speakers.Explosive themes. Inspiring performances. And our belief that the fight of feminism is a human rights struggle,’ added Kundu.

Using our influence as a leading brand that supports and values our female employees, we aspire that this festival becomes a platform and a convergence point for those who believe in equality, fairness and kindness for all,” added Shankar.
This will be followed by an evocative dance performance by STEM (Space Time Energy Movement) Dance Kampni, the performing wing of Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography, helmed by Indian classical, contemporary dancer and choreographer, Madhu Nataraj.

National Geographic’s Earth Day #SaveTogether campaign aims to take an affirmative action to help conserve the world’s most iconic and endangered creatures across the globe
From iconic photographs to remarkable expeditions, wildlife conservation is the centerpiece at National Geographic since its inception, 132 years ago. Through trailblazing research and powerful storytelling, National Geographic has been shining light on the importance of wildlife conservation. On this World Wildlife Day (03 March, 2020), National Geographic is launching the Earth Day #SaveTogether campaign that will highlight 50 at-risk species facing extinction, and increase wildlife conservation efforts to protect them for next 50 years. Through this 50-day long campaign, National Geographic will showcase dedicated wildlife programming linked to animal conservation for the next 50 days, at 8pm from March 4 till 50th anniversary of the Earth Day on April 22. Special programs such as India’s Jungle Heroes, The Real Black Panther and Wild Cats of India will be a part of the 50-day marathon. From following researchers deep into the realm of the rare clouded leopard, exploring the story of Saya- the Black Panther in the deep forests of Kabini, to witnessing the efforts of conservationists in rescuing animals in distress across different parts of India, these programs will take viewers on unforgettable journeys into the wild world.
On the advent of an intensifying climate crisis perturbing the wildlife across the globe, the current climate conditions are an eye-opener for us to stop, think and address the issue. While according to an estimate more than one billion mammals, birds and reptiles have lost their lives during the Australian bushfires, the number of fires in the Amazon rainforest has increased by 30.5% and deforestation by 85% in 2019. World Wildlife Day is an opportunity to celebrate the incalculable value of wildlife and to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits that their conservation provides to people with the help of National Geographic Society’s researchers, experts, scientists conducting on-ground research and conservational practices to preserve places—and the species that depend on them. Through this campaign, National Geographic will create awareness and galvanize people to work towards animal conversation.
Commenting on the campaign, Vice President and Head, Content & Marketing at National Geographic India, Mr. Pawan Soni states, “Today, the young audiences are inclined towards brands with a purpose. At National Geographic, it is our mission to raise awareness on the importance of wildlife conservation & explore our vital, enriching and ultimately humanizing connection with the animal world. By supporting young wildlife conversationalists across India and globe in conducting critical scientific research, fieldwork, and the development and
deployment of innovative conservation solutions, we are raising awareness about animal welfare and conservation.”
Balance & inclusion in society possible through the Constitution: Legal luminary
BENGALURU: Taking cognizance of the increasing role of the judiciary in the enforcement of rule of law, noted legal luminary Dr. Shashikala Gurpur today pointed out that balance and inclusion in society can be achieved through the Constitution also.
“The Supreme Court in its recent judgement on privacy issues has brought in the notion of inclusion of the vulnerable sections of society,” she said as an example of what can be accomplished by the rule of law. “The Indian Constitution is proactive, facilitative and preventive in its nature of functioning,” added Dr. Gurupur, a former member of the Law Commission of India and Professor of Law & Director, Symbiosis Law School Pune.
Speaking at National Seminar on Recent Trends in Constitutional Law organised by the CMR University’s School of Legal Studies, Dr. Gurpur, sought to enlarge the interpretation of Article 21 of the Constitution to tackle issues of subtle sexism and hostility towards women.
She exhorted the CMR students to become lawyers to help the vulnerable people like the old and the aged, the trauma survivors, mental health patients, homeless and the victims of abuse, indirectly hinting that law students were increasingly inclined towards corporate law sector.
Sharing similar views, Dr Dilip Ukey, Vice Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University, in his keynote address said that India had to function as a social democracy and not just legal democracy if the nation wanted to empower its population.
The School of Legal Studies also released its first edition of CMR University Journal for Contemporary Legal Affairs in the presence of Dr. Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan, Director of Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad and Dr MS ShivaKumar, Vice Chancellor of CMR University.
The journal has incisive discussions on subjects like ‘Women’s rights as human rights: A dynamic approach towards gender justice’ by Dr Ishwara Bhat, Vice Chancellor of Karnataka State Law University.
