Global Grandmasters Make the Right Moves at GITAM Tournament

Visakhapatnam/June 15, 2022: The 3rd Vizag Grandmasters International Chess Tournament 2022 recently kicked off at GITAM University in the city of Vizag, with about 1,000 registered players, including 150 international FIDE-rated players, competing in three categories based on their chess ratings. The eight-day tournament is slated to run from June 10-17, 2022 and was inaugurated in the presence of dignitaries such as M. Sri Bharat, President, Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM), GITAM Campus Life Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gowtham Rao, GITAM Secretary M. Bharadwaj, International Chess Arbiter and the Chief Arbiter of the tournament Ravichandran, Andhra Chess Association Secretary S. Bheema Rao and GITAM Sports Director K. Arun Karthik.

It is being held in the offline format, organized by GITAM University and Andhra Chess Association under the aegis of the All-India Chess Federation and FIDE (World Chess Federation) and supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, GOI.

The Tournament has chess matches under three categories: Players with ratings of 2000 and above (Category A), players with ratings of 2000 and below for the last three years (Category B) and players with ratings of 1600 and below for the last three years (Category C). The total prize money is Rs 15 lakh for Category A (40 prizes) and Rs 5 lakh each for Categories B and C (100 prizes each).

Chess players from countries including USA, Georgia, Vietnam, FIDE, Sri Lanka, India Bangladesh, Azerbaijan to name a few are participating in the tournament. Each category in the tournament is also witnessing the participation of Indian and international chess masters, both male and female, in Under 7, Under 9, Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 formats. It also has matches for unrated players.

25 YEARS JOURNEY OF VIJAYA COMPOSITE PU COLLEGE

Vijaya Education Institute was founded by Sri K S Chandrasekhariah on January 30th 1956. He started with one student and today , it has grown to be a very well known and reputed Institution , offering education to thousands of students from kindergarten to bachelor’s degree classes . After successfully running primary , secondary and high school for the first 42 years , in 1998 , Vijaya Composite Pre University College was started under the umbrella of VEIT . It was inaugurated by his holiness Sri Sri Sri Vishvesha Theertha Sripadangalavaru of the Pejawar Mutt . Under the guidance of Sri K S Chandrasekhariah , the leadership of the first Principal , Senior Retired professors and young lecturers , the college grew and progressed without compromising on its ideals , quality of education , ethics and culture . There were only two sections with 70 students in each with PCMB combination . With time , the number of classes and sections increased . In 2018 , we started the commerce sections for students interested in that field .

Our college has a number of well – equipped laboratories for practical subjects and boasts a well stocked and referenced library . It also has a PE unit , a Yoga training centre , a botanical garden and a student counselling unit . A full – fledged academic hall is another significant unit of the college which , was inaugurated by late prof . UR Rao , Chairman , ISRO .
