Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi Detects Silent Heart Disease in Young Siblings; Performs Life-Saving Bypass Surgeries

Bengaluru, October 10, 2025:
A routine health check-up turned into a life-saving intervention for Chikmagalur-based siblings Neeraj (24) and Neeti (22), when doctors at Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, uncovered a rare and silent form of heart disease. Both siblings, who appeared healthy and had no prior symptoms or medical issues, were diagnosed with Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) — a hereditary condition that causes extremely high cholesterol levels and leads to early-onset coronary artery disease.

Despite their young age and lack of symptoms, advanced cardiac evaluations revealed multiple severe blockages in their coronary arteries, placing them at high risk of a heart attack. Responding promptly, the cardiac surgery team led by Dr. Sudarshan G.T., Additional Director – Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, and Dr. Mathew Maurish Thomas, Associate Consultant – Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, successfully performed Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgeries on both siblings on the same day.

Each procedure lasted nearly five hours and was carried out on a beating heart, using the siblings’ own arteries and veins for grafting. Neeti underwent four bypass grafts, while Neeraj received three. Both patients made a strong recovery under close post-operative care and were discharged in stable condition within 10 days.

Dr. Sudarshan G.T., Additional Director – Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, said, “Detecting such extensive blockages in two siblings in their early 20s with no symptoms is extremely rare and concerning. Familial Hypercholesterolemia is a silent yet aggressive disorder, and early screening is vital to prevent sudden cardiac events. This case reinforces the importance of preventive health check-ups and timely medical intervention in saving lives.”

Dr. Mathew Maurish Thomas, Associate Consultant – Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, added, “Discovering severe coronary artery disease in young, asymptomatic siblings is highly unusual. Their case highlights how heart disease can remain hidden and strike without warning. Early diagnosis through routine screening and timely surgical treatment helped us restore normal blood flow and safeguard their long-term health. Continuous follow-up, medication, and lifestyle changes will now be essential to maintain their heart health.”
