PCOS Cases among Women Rising During Covid19 Lockdown due to Lifestyle Changes

India has witnessed a spike of 30% in PCOS cases in last few years, a trend that got exacerbated due to the lifestyle changes enforced by the pandemic, says Dr Vidya V Bhat, Fertility Specialist & Medical Director, RadhaKrishna Multispecialty Hospital

Bengaluru/ August 29, 2020: Lifestyle changes forced by Covid19 lockdown since the past several months have made women much more susceptible to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), with the last few months seeing a sharp rise in the number of cases. Being home-bound, lack of exercise, online ordering of junk food, binge watching TV, and irregular sleep patterns have led to an increase in average weight gain among women. This, coupled with ignoring irregular or heavy menstrual cycles in the lockdown period, is driving the spike in PCOS cases, according to Dr. Vidya V Bhat, Laparoscopic Surgeon and Fertility Specialist and Medical Director of RadhaKrishna Multispecialty Hospital, Bengaluru.

Said Dr. Vidya V Bhat: “PCOS is a common disease of the endocrine gland. Most studies in India report its prevalence anywhere from 9% to 36%. PCOS accounts for 85% of ovulatory disorders in women, which are a prominent cause of infertility. Yet, many women remain unaware that they are suffering from PCOS. India has witnessed a spike of 30 percent in cases of PCOS in the last few years, a trend which got exacerbated due to the lifestyle changes enforced by the pandemic.”

Said Dr Vidya V Bhat: “The lockdown has complicated health issues for women. Irregular follow-ups with the doctor during the Covid times is leading to an increase in the incidence of PCOS, especially among women who are undergoing treatment for infertility. This disorder is also linked with higher levels of circulating insulin, and there is a spike in the number of diabetic patients during the lockdown. Sedentary lifestyle and becoming a couch-potato are increasing the chances of relapse of PCOS in patients, or the disorder becoming much more severe with increased symptoms.”
According to Dr. Vidya V Bhat, PCOS can happen due to causes such as excessive consumption of saturated fat, weight gain, inflammation, chemicals and hormonal imbalance. It has major health implications including obesity, infertility, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and mental and psychological problems. The disorder can also result in irregular periods, excessive facial or body hair, thinning of hair, skin discoloration and sleep apnea. PCOS is detected using an ultrasound exam or blood test. Lifestyle management is very important for PCOS patients, including regulated diet, physical exercise and management of blood sugar and hypertension. Treatment can also involve oral contraceptive pills and laparoscopy.”
Busting the prevalent myths about PCOS, Dr. Vidya V Bhat said: “Contrary to popular belief, women with children can also have PCOS, while women with PCOS can also have children. PCOS does not discriminate based on age. It is also not necessary for any woman to be overweight to suffer from PCOS.”

The doctor said that the trend of online consultation with a gynaecologist during the lockdown period, though comforting for the patient, does not help much in treatment. “PCOS needs to be treated through a proper scan and then treatment given depending on the severity of the disorder. This cannot be done over a tele-consultation. The physical presence of patient in front of the doctor is necessary for proper diagnosis of PCOS and decide an appropriate treatment plan,” Dr Vidya V Bhat added.

BOCI seeks extension of Loan EMIs; approaches PM Modi for assistance

Bengaluru, 28th August 2020:  Bus & Car Operators Confederation of India (BOCI) and Karnataka State Bus Owners Federation (KSBOF) Bangalore have approached the Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a desperate attempt to seek relaxation in the terms of their impending loans. The two bodiesrepresenting district association of bus owners operating buses from various districts of state of Karnataka and neighboring states have been facing umpteen troubles right from the onset of lockdown in March. Even after 5 months, over 7,600 stage carriage busses still remain non-operational, with just around 400 resuming operations that too under strict protocols. This has resulted in miserable condition of all transport operators alike.

Right from paying the drivers and conductors to maintaining the vehicles, from fulfilling tax liabilities to meet ends with only half the fare and all of this when fuel prices are mounting, the transport operators are facing an existential crisis like never before. While the state government did help in some regards and even made way for an extension of loan EMIs until after 31st August, the members of BOCI seem to be in no position to meet their EMI obligations starting September, since there has been virtually no improvement in the ill-effects of the pandemic on the sector. To ensure further help to its financially struggling members, BOCI has now approached Prime Minister Modi, seeking a moratorium period on the loan EMIs until December 2020.

With respect to this request, Mr. Rajavarma Ballal, All India Sectorial Vice President of Stage Carriage Service Sector, Bus & Car Operators Confederation of India (BOCI),said, “State Governments and banks have helped us to some extent by extending the moratorium for a few months, but unfortunately that is not enough to revive the ailing public transport sector. The operators have suffered tremendous losses over the past 6 months, and there is little hope until the services resume fully. Hence, I believe this request is well-founded and must be heeded urgently.”

Mr. Prasanna Patwardhan, President, Bus & Car Operators Confederation of India (BOCI) said, “Our financial troubles don’t seem to end anytime soon. The pandemic is far from over, and we have no idea whatsoever, if or when will we be able to resume operations as before. Until then, an extension of the moratorium period for our Loan EMIs is probably our only hope for survival. Public transport sector has a cascading effect on overall economy, and we urge the Government to take necessary measures before it’s too late.”

BOCI has also sought the help of the local and state governments over the past months in a bid to reduce the financial burdens on the members of the confederation, who have all been suffering at the hands of the pandemic, and the lockdown that ensued as a result of the same. The body now hopes to receive a positive reply from the centre!

Rainbow Children’s Hospital launches “Paediatric Epilepsy Clinic”

Rainbow Children’s Hospital launched “Paediatric Epilepsy Clinic” to treat epilepsy among kids on Tuesday. This will help in clustering care and services for children with Epilepsy.

Epilepsy cases in children have a wide spectrum. While some of them may not even require treatment, there are cases which respond poorly to treatment. Sometimes prolonged seizures can require ICU care also. Hence, it is important to identify the type of epilepsy and initiate appropriate treatment at the earliest. These types of dedicated centres for kids come with better experience and investigations. This will help in identifying and treating such kids more efficiently.

Some of the common reasons for epilepsy among kids are due to brain malformations, insults to the growing brain in early childhood and genetics. Epilepsy in children has unique characteristics and treatment strategies, which are different from adults. Unfortunately, many kids end up having over or under diagnosed, with inappropriate treatment and poor symptom control. The Rainbow Children’s Hospital’s “Paediatric Epilepsy Clinic” will help to appropriately diagnose and treat children with epilepsy. Dr.Prabhjot Kaur, Consultant Pediatric Neurology from RCH said that Epilepsy was treatable in 70-80 pc of children with medicines alone. “What is required is an awareness of the broad spectrum and unusual manifestations of epilepsy in children so that we can effectively treat them to provide the best outcomes; and this is what we will strive to do at Pediatric Epilepsy clinic at RCH,” she added.

Speaking to the media, Rainbow Children’s Hospital vice-president and Bengaluru cluster chief Mr Neeraj Lal said, “Children are less likely to experience symptoms related to seizure.
