Bengaluru: Nanjangud MLA B Harshavardhan has requested Tourism Minister Anand Singh to extend budgetary support of Rs 20 crore in the current fiscal for the development of the Gandhi Ashram of Badanavalu and the proposed Kapila Vana in Nanjangud town.
The MLA submitted a memorandum to this effect to the Minister on Wednesday in Vidhana Soudha.
Harshavardhan has explained to the Minister that the Badanavalu village, where the Gandhi Ashram is located, would be developed on the lines of the Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat. A blueprint has already been chalked out. Mahatma Gandhi had visited Badanavalu, where a Khadi spinning centre was functioning. The centre still operational. The MLA said that the place, which is of historical importance, is intended to be developed as part of the 150th-anniversary celebrations of the Mahatma. He also submitted a copy of the plans he had chalked out for the development, to the Minister.
The MLA, who has been eager to add greenery to the temple town of Nanjangud, has planned to develop the Kapila Vana on the lines of the botanical gardens of Ootacamund.
Harshavardhan pointed out that Nanjangud is a well-known tourist place because of the Srikanteshwara temple, which is popularly known as Dakshina Kaashi. The town is just 23 km away from Mysuru. A national highway that runs close to the town connects to Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Nanjangud is not only a historical place but also geographically beautiful. Keeping all these in view, the government must include the two said projects in the current year’s budget allocations, he insisted.
The MLA also submitted copies of the plans of both the projects to the Minister.
