1,000 New Beginnings: Sankalp and DKMS Mark Major Milestone in Thalassemia Care

Bengaluru, September 4, 2026: In a significant milestone for paediatric healthcare in India, Sankalp India Foundation has completed 1,000 stem cell transplantations for children, offering new hope to young patients living with severe inherited blood disorders such as thalassemia.

The achievement, themed “1,000 Beginnings,” will be celebrated in Bengaluru on September 5. The milestone also highlights the success of a partnership spanning more than a decade between Sankalp India Foundation, international nonprofit organisation DKMS, and medical and knowledge partner Cure2Children Foundation.

For children affected by severe thalassemia and other inherited blood disorders, stem cell transplantation can offer the possibility of a life free from frequent blood transfusions and lifelong treatment.

Of the 1,000 paediatric transplants carried out through Sankalp, DKMS has supported the transplantation costs of more than 820 children. Over the years, the partnership has expanded beyond financial assistance to include thalassemia management, transplantation infrastructure, diagnostics, specialist training and clinical research.

Dr. Elke Neujahr, Global CEO of DKMS, said the milestone demonstrated the impact of sustained collaboration.

“One thousand transplants show what long-term partnerships can achieve. Sankalp brings extraordinary local expertise and commitment, while Cure2Children contributes vital medical knowledge. Together, we can help make access to a cure a reality for more children. This is the kind of sustainable collaboration we want to build — in the country, for the country.”

A Decade of Expanding Access and Care

Sankalp launched its first paediatric bone marrow transplantation programme in Bengaluru in 2015 in partnership with Cure2Children. The collaboration with DKMS also began the same year with free HLA typing and has since expanded across various stages of the treatment pathway.

Today, DKMS supports HLA typing for patients and their families, thalassemia management and transplantation costs. The organisation has also contributed towards strengthening specialised paediatric bone marrow transplantation capacity and molecular diagnostics in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.

The partnership further includes specialist training for nurses and, since 2025, collaboration in clinical research.

Rajat Kumar Agarwal, President of Sankalp India Foundation, said the achievement was about much more than numbers.

“For us, these 1,000 transplants represent 1,000 new beginnings. They demonstrate that a cure can become accessible when organisations bring their strengths together with a shared purpose. This milestone also proves that centres working in resource-constrained settings can achieve world-class outcomes and internationally recognised quality while keeping transplantation affordable and accessible.”

He added that partnerships with organisations such as DKMS and Cure2Children have played a crucial role in expanding access to curative treatment for children.

Sankalp India Foundation currently provides care to more than 3,000 children through 30 comprehensive thalassemia day-care centres. It also operates two paediatric bone marrow transplantation centres in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.

Its prevention network includes 87 centres across 81 districts, where more than 220,000 couples have been screened as part of efforts to prevent and reduce the burden of thalassemia and other haemoglobin disorders.

International Recognition for Quality of Care

The partnership has also achieved an important milestone in quality standards. The BMJH-Sankalp Centre for Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and BMT in Bengaluru has become the first programme in India to receive JACIE accreditation.

JACIE accreditation is internationally recognised in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy. It reflects compliance with stringent standards covering clinical care, stem cell collection and processing, quality management and patient safety.

The accreditation reinforces the possibility of delivering internationally benchmarked transplant care sustainably in India without necessarily relying on increasingly expensive and complex models of treatment.

Shaheem’s Journey: One of 1,000 New Beginnings

Behind the milestone are the stories of hundreds of children and their families.

Muhammad Shaheem from Karnataka was diagnosed with severe thalassemia when he was just five months old. Years of regular blood transfusions resulted in severe iron overload, affecting his heart and liver and making a stem cell transplant particularly challenging.

His younger sister, Zara, was identified as a fully HLA-matched donor. Following intensive preparation and counselling at the Sankalp-BMJH Centre in Bengaluru, the family decided to proceed with the transplantation.

Shaheem’s mother, Zareena, understands the burden of the disease personally. Living with thalassemia major herself, she continues to require regular treatment and blood transfusions.

“As a mother, I wanted my son to have the chance to live a life that is not determined by thalassemia. We were afraid, but the team gave us the confidence to move forward. Seeing Shaheem today makes that decision worth everything,” she said.

The completion of 1,000 paediatric stem cell transplants marks both a celebration of what has been achieved and a renewed commitment towards the future.

For Sankalp India Foundation and its partners, the next goal is to enable more children to access curative treatment while continuing to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure needed to deliver high-quality and sustainable care.

The milestone represents another important step towards Sankalp’s long-term vision of building a thalassemia- and haemoglobinopathies-free India by 2047.

MedGenome Launches OncoTrack MRD to Strengthen Precision Cancer Care in India

Bengaluru, September 3, 2026: With India witnessing a steadily rising cancer burden and an estimated 1.5 million new cases diagnosed every year, early detection of recurrence remains one of the most significant challenges in cancer care. Many patients may be at risk of cancer returning even when there are no visible signs of the disease through conventional clinical assessment or imaging.

Addressing this critical diagnostic gap, MedGenome has launched OncoTrack MRD, described as India’s first indigenous, personalised and ultra-sensitive Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS)-based tumour-informed Molecular Residual Disease (MRD) test.

The test is designed to detect circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) in the bloodstream by creating a customised molecular profile using an initial baseline tissue and blood sample. Once this personalised profile is established, subsequent monitoring can be carried out through a standard blood draw, enabling oncologists to assess the risk of recurrence earlier while complementing conventional imaging and clinical monitoring.

Dr. Vedam Ramprasad, CEO of MedGenome Labs Ltd, said the growing cancer burden in India has increased the need for more precise tools to identify patients who may be at risk of recurrence even in the absence of visible disease.

“Our personalised and ultra-sensitive NGS-based tumour-informed MRD test adds an important layer of molecular insight to complement existing clinical assessment and imaging. It can help clinicians make more informed decisions regarding treatment and follow-up care,” he said.

He added that OncoTrack MRD reflects MedGenome’s continued focus on making advanced precision oncology and genomic diagnostics more accessible to patients and healthcare professionals across the country.

The test has been developed in-house and can be used for major solid tumours, including breast, lung, colorectal and gynaecological cancers. With home sample collection and nationwide availability, the test can be performed multiple times a year depending on the patient’s clinical requirements and the treating oncologist’s recommendation.

The launch of OncoTrack MRD marks another step towards expanding access to advanced molecular diagnostics in India. As precision oncology continues to evolve, molecular monitoring is expected to play an increasingly important role alongside imaging and clinical evaluation, helping doctors personalise treatment strategies, monitor patients more closely and improve long-term cancer management.

Ramaiah Memorial Hospital Leads Organ Donation Awareness Drive in Bengaluru

Karnataka Health Minister U.T. Khader calls for greater public participation in “The Gift of Life”

Bengaluru, September 2, 2026: Ramaiah Memorial Hospital on Tuesday organised an Organ Donation Awareness Drive in Bengaluru, bringing together healthcare professionals, organ donors and their families, transplant recipients, patients and members of the public to promote organ donation and reinforce the message of “The Gift of Life.”

Nurturing the Gift of Life: Dignitaries water a sapling to symbolize the vital impact of organ donation.L-R:Dr. Janaki MG (Dean, RMCH)Dr. Harish K (Director, Ramaiah Institute of Oncosciences)Dr. Nagendra Swamy S.C. (CEO, RMH)Dr. M.R. Jayaram (Chairman, GEF & Chancellor, RUAS)Shri. U T Khader (Hon’ble Health Minister, Karnataka)Dr. Madan S. Gaekwad (COO, RMH)Dr. D Ramesh (Medical Director, RMCH)Dr. Mahesh E (Director, Ramaiah Institute of Nephro-Uro Sciences)

The programme was graced by Shri U.T. Khader, Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka, who highlighted the need for greater awareness and stronger participation in deceased organ donation.

The initiative comes at a time when India continues to face a significant gap between the demand for organs and their availability. Despite a record 20,138 organ transplants being performed in 2025, a large majority were supported by living donors. More than 89,000 patients were awaiting organ transplants as of March 2026, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen deceased organ donation across the country.

India’s deceased organ donation rate continues to remain below one donor per million population, considerably lower than several countries with well-established organ donation systems. Hospital experts stressed that while living organ transplantation has emerged as a safe and highly successful treatment option for patients with kidney and liver failure, living donation alone cannot meet the growing demand for organs.

Increasing awareness, encouraging families to pledge organ donation, timely identification of potential brain-dead donors and strengthening hospital-level coordination are essential to addressing the shortage, experts said.

Speaking at the event, Shri U.T. Khader said, “Organ donation is a gift that transcends boundaries of relation and community. The Government of Karnataka remains committed to strengthening deceased donation infrastructure across the state, and initiatives like this by Ramaiah Memorial Hospital play a vital role in encouraging more citizens to come forward and pledge their organs.”

Dr. M. R. Jayaram, Chairman, Gokula Education Foundation (Medical) and Chancellor, Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences (RUAS), said organ donation represents one of the most meaningful expressions of human compassion.

He said, “Today’s gathering reflects our collective responsibility to build greater public awareness and trust around deceased organ donation. Every family that comes forward brings us closer to reducing India’s organ shortage and giving more patients a genuine chance at life.”

Dr. Nagendra Swamy S. C., Chief Executive, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital & Healthcare Services, GEF (Medical), said organ transplantation, through both living and deceased donation, has evolved into one of the most dependable treatment options for patients suffering from end-stage organ failure.

“With thousands of patients awaiting transplants, the demand for organs continues to far exceed their availability. Through this awareness drive, we hope to inspire more citizens to pledge organ donation and help bridge this critical gap,” he said.

The awareness programme also provided an opportunity for healthcare professionals, donor families and transplant recipients to share experiences and strengthen public understanding of the importance of organ donation.

Ramaiah Memorial Hospital said the initiative reflects its continued commitment to ethical transplant practices, donor awareness and high-quality transplant care. The hospital’s transplant programme covers multiple organ systems and is supported by a multidisciplinary team of specialists working towards advancing safe and effective transplant services in Karnataka.

The event concluded with a renewed call for citizens and families to consider organ donation, with the central message remaining clear: a single decision to donate can offer several patients a second chance at life.
